Becoming a Precinct Chair

The office of "Precinct Committeeperson (PC)" is defined in the Illinois Election Code which also defines the process for becoming one. The Illinois Election Code describes the makeup of the County Party in "(10 ILCS 5/7-8) (from Ch. 46, par. 7-8), County Central Committee". In addition, the Bylaws of the ATRO define the County Party's role in the process.

There are two paths for being a PC: (1) run for the office; or (2) be appointed to a vacancy.

Office seekers for Republican PC stand for election in the Republican Primary every two years. The process for running for the office of PC can be found on the McHenry County website. Please ask for help with completing the form. We can also notarize the form.

After the Primary Election, for all precincts where a PC did not file for office and the office was not filled by the election, the office is open and vacant. Seats may be filled by appointment for the remainder of the current term. Candidates who wish to fill a vacancy to become a PC must first file an application.

Appointed PC Applications

The Township Chair or Precinct Committeeperson Vacancy Committee (if one exists) reviews applications of those who apply for vacant PC positions, who otherwise meet the requirements of the election code, and make recommendations to the County Chair about their qualification for a recommendation for confirmation by the County Executive Committee.
